The key to flipping the House and Senate in November isn’t changing the hearts and minds of MAGA followers. We need to get more Democrats and Independents off the couch.
In the recent 2026 primaries, the average turnout across states was 26% of those eligible. Historically, voter turnout for general elections hovers around 40% for midterms and 60% for presidential elections. That means individual votes in midterms typically carry even more weight — one answer to why voting matters this November.
But it also means that we have the opportunity to engage millions of eligible voters to take back our democracy by flipping the House and Senate. We need to reach out to voters NOW, by phone banking, door knocking, writing postcards, registering voters, providing voter ID assistance, and talking to the people in our lives.
I keep seeing news stories that say Democrats are in disarray, because some states chose candidates in their primaries who are “too far left” while the Democratic Party pushed for more moderate candidates. This might drive bait-clicks, but I think it’s a false narrative.
To quote Jessica Craven, “In each of the recent bruising Democratic primaries, the losers have immediately conceded, congratulated the winning contender, and committed to helping them win. That is not dysfunction. It’s a beautiful example of unity, and how democracy should work.”
Ultimately, this midterm election will come down to voter turnout. We need a massive Blue Wave that overwhelms Trump’s relentless attempts to suppress votes and interfere with fair elections.
The fate of democracy is truly in our hands. Let’s not squander it. If you’ve been promising yourself that you’d do election work after the summer, now is the time. What are you going to do to get out the vote in the next 76 days?
