Trump’s outlandish 1.8B slush-fund deal is getting a lot of news coverage, resulting in outrage. People are infuriated at the thought of giving federal funds to the January 6th insurrectionists who viciously attacked law enforcement officers during the deadliest assault on Congress in American history. The provision protecting Trump and his family from ever being prosecuted or audited for tax fraud is yet another bridge too far. Trump seems unfettered by any ethical or legal qualms now. But this particular act of corruption is so egregious that we may be able to change some hearts and minds with it.
It will drive Trump’s poll numbers even lower, helping us to get out the vote for the midterm elections and hopefully giving a few members of Congress a backbone.
Republicans were so angry about the slush fund and immunity agreement that the Senate leadership left early on Thursday instead of passing the $72 billion funding for immigration agencies. And the House also left early, because Republicans didn’t have the votes to defeat the War Powers Act.
Trump’s ousting of anyone in his party who isn’t completely loyal to him may also backfire by creating representatives with nothing to lose from defying an unpopular president. For instance, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy just voted for the War Powers Resolution, spoke out against Trump’s ballroom, and opposed the slush fund. Representative Massie has promised to make Trump’s life difficult during his last 7 months. And John Cornyn was just defeated by Ken Paxton in the TX primary, a crushing blow to more moderate Republicans.
As horrible as the news is these days, there are some hopeful signs. But it’s up to us to ensure these bursts of dissent aren’t fleeting — keep up the pressure (see 5 Calls script). And we need to get all Democrats and Independents registered, engaged, and voting. Let’s get to work!
